Goska's History

1920 - 1930

The building that now houses Goska's Liquors had its humble beginnings as the Kleiss family's General Store in the 1920s. However, it was in 1930 when two brothers, Walter and Alex Goska, stepped in and transformed it into Goska Brothers Store. Specializing in fresh cut meats and groceries, the store also offered kerosene, gasoline, feed, and even featuring an ice house on the property. With the dedicated efforts of Walter's wife, Helen, the Goska's quickly became a cornerstone of the town.

1930 - 1940

The 1930s marked a turning point for Goska Brothers, thanks to the repeal of Prohibition in 1933. No longer confined to selling daily essentials, the store expanded its offerings to include beer and liquor, satisfying the newfound desires of its customers. Brands like Gunther and American became popular choices, and the locally brewed National Bohemian was yet to be known by its affectionate moniker, Natty Boh.

1940 - 1960

As the town of Severna Park evolved during the 1940s, so did Goska's Liquors. The aftermath of another World War brought changes, while the modern Ritchie Highway became the lifeline linking Baltimore to Annapolis. Summer cottages along the Magothy River gave way to permanent homes and communities, and the automobile's popularity led to the fading of the B&A Railroad. Amidst these shifts, the Goska family's dedication and hard work kept their doors open.

1960's

The passing of Walter Goska in 1957 brought new challenges for Helen Goska, who continued to run the store with the help of her sister, Eva Schwartz. However, it was during this time that the next generation stepped in. Walter Sosnoski, Helen's nephew, joined the family business, balancing his role at Goska's with a full-time job as a pharmacist. He brought fresh ideas and unwavering dedication, turning Goska's into a full-fledged liquor store while preserving the family's cherished name. Every customer was greeted and appreciated, setting a standard of service that would become Goska's hallmark.

Present Day

Today, Goska's Liquors stands tall, proud of its rich heritage and the efforts of generations past and present. Having celebrated its 80th Anniversary in 2010, the store remains a vital part of the community, with the third generation of owners continuing the family tradition. With gratitude for your ongoing support, Goska's Liquors looks forward to being your preferred choice for many years to come.
